Summit Seekers Challenge

This will undoubtedly be the ultimate trekking experience in Ireland. This trek will endeavour to bring challengers to the summit of the highest mountains on the island of Ireland in one weekend.
Summit Seekers Challenge

31st July & 2nd August 2010

There have been many lists produced recording the Irish mountains and categorizing them in order of their height.  Ultimately, the most prestigious of these lists is that which includes the highest mountains in Ireland, i.e. those over 900m. In order for a mountain to be included on this list there must be at least 15 metres of height-gain above the highest adjacent col to qualify. It is generally accepted that there are 14 such mountains in Ireland, Carrauntoohil, of which, is the highest at a prominence of 1039m.

Our challenge to all Summit Seekers Challengers is to climb all 14 mountains, over the August Bank Holiday weekend and we are looking for 20 fit and eager people to take part.

Our 2010 Summit Seekers Challenge, previously known as the 14 Munro Challenge will be in its third year.  Each year we have had an amazing group of people taking to the beautiful Irish countryside to take part in what is a challenging but very rewarding experience while raising money for our Primary Education in Africa Fund.

Cruach Mor - Munro Challenge 2008

Day 1:

Challengers will be collected from a central pick-up location (yet to be finalised), very early on the morning of Saturday 31st July. Everybody must be ready and in their hiking gear. The bus will leave promptly to ensure the group arrives at Skeheenaranky, Co Tipperary, no later than 0900hrs to climb Galtee Mór, the first munro followeded Brandon, Co. Kerry. It’s been estimated that the hiking should finish around 1800hrs, with enough time to get to our hotel in Killarney for a meal and an early night, ready for the next day.

Day 2:

This will be a long but rewarding day, leaving our hotel at 0530hrs. This day we will take on
11 munro's, all in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks, Co. Kerry. It is estimated that this should take around 12-14 hrs, depending on the speed of the group. Then back to our hotel for another meal and another early night.

Day 3:

Following an early breakfast, we will leave Killarney and head for Co. Wicklow to climb our last mountain, Lugnaquilla. We can then congratulate ourselves on an excellent achievement.

Galtee Mor - Munro Challenge 2008

As per our advertisements, this challenge will take place over three days, Saturday 31st July, Sunday 1st of August and Monday 2nd August 2010.

We are looking for about 20 fit, eager and quite well experienced people to accept this challenge. It is only at the level of hiking or basic scrambling, but due to the intensity of this event relatively experienced and quite fit people are being sought.

Daylight hours for early August are; sunrise 5:40, sunset 21:20, approx. That is more than 15 hours of daylight, and we will need every minute of it! Each day we will expect to be on the trail by sunrise at the latest.

Private buses will be used to ferry the challengers and support staff. These buses will collect everyone from a central pick-up location(s), very early on the morning of Saturday 31st July and will transfer challengers to and from the base of each mountain. This will be our mode of transport until we are dropped back to our pick-up location, on Monday afternoon.

Accommodation will be provided. This is by way of a hotel for the Saturday and Sunday nights. A take away breakfast will be provided on the Sunday morning, as we will be leaving too early to get breakfast in the hotel. An evening meal is provided each evening. Monday morning breakfast will be as usual, with check-out and return home thereafter.

There will be 2-3 guides, each with radio contact and we will be dispersed throughout the team. The team may be broken into sub-groups of 4-5 individuals, but each individual will need to be self-reliant and will need to be equipped with their own maps, compass and basic safety equipment.

Details of kit requirements, training guidelines, health and safety advice and many other issues are included in the Trek Manual which will be emailed to each participant after they sign up.

This challenge will be ran purely as a team challenge, with the goal simply to safely get every challenger to the summit of every mountain.

Costs per person should not exceed €250 between food, hotels, and buses for the trip. This will be covered by means of a non-refundable deposit of €250, plus, sponsorship of €1000 for Concern. In this way you can tell all your donors that all sponsorship collected by you is going directly to Concern, not to the expenses incurred in carrying out this challenge. This event is advertised on the Concern website, and all sponsorship monies will be paid via this website, www.concernchallenge.org, or directly to Concern.
